Two spotlights shining on Vanderbilt's logo

Oh hey! Welcome to the community!

What’s in a name? When it comes to eRezLife, there’s so much more than what you might expect! While the software was developed by residence life professionals for residence life professionals, more clients outside of the field of residence life are using the same features to work for them. I had the chance to speak with Sara Cope, the Senior Coordinator of Operations and Events at Vanderbilt University, about how they use eRezLife for their University Student Center.

Q: What does Vanderbilt’s University Student Center use eRezLife for?

A: We use eRezLife to hire new student employees. We employ about 60 undergraduate and graduate students each school year, and we manage an ongoing staff selection process through eRezLife from their initial application through the job offer phase.

Q: Why did you select eRezLife as your staff selection software?

A: We were inspired by the use of eRezLife in our Dean of Students division, specifically how colleagues were using the platform to hire Graduate Assistants. The biggest appeal for me was the ability to ‘go green’ with our interviews, since eRezLife allows a way for selection committees to take notes during the interview and rank candidates without having to submit physical paperwork.

Q: What features work well for you and your team?

A: We love having candidate applications, resumes, and interview scoresheets all in one place digitally! We also appreciate being able to copy over the same job year after year and make minor updates – that is a huge time saver. Lastly, we like being able to accept one ‘common application’ for all the different student positions we have, which is made possible by a ranking feature for candidates on the application. eRezLife reduces the work required of our staff during the busy selection season.

Q: Did anything about the eRezLife community surprise you?

A: I have always been pleasantly surprised at the resources available through the newsletter and help portion of the site. I am also very grateful for the hand-holding that I received at the beginning of setting up my first position.

Q: Do you have any advice for departments outside of Residence Life who may be considering eRezLife?

A: I would suggest thinking about challenges or complications in your own staff selection process and then arranging a demo to see if eRezLife could ease any of those issues. I was most inspired by seeing the process in action at my university already, so if there is another department with similar needs as yours, it may be beneficial to multiple people if you explore a shared option together.
